40^th Asian Track Championships: Day 4

On a sunny Sunday, a group of my friends gathered and headed to Jincheon where 40^th Asian Track Championships was helding.

Generally speaking, in Korea, we may say cycling is not a mainstream sports although it is becoming more popular in accordance with other sports’ popularity in recent years.

But right after entering the velodrome, I felt we made a right choice for the day. What we could see on the track, I would say, quite interesting and mind-boggling. The track was so close to the audience we even could reach the athletes by hand, but sure we didn’t try that ‘cause we all know we shouldn’t do so. And the energy and vibe, the trembling on the floor which is made of woods, were something.

Watching the games went on, it reminded me of watching short-tracks skating games of last Winter Olympics and it seemed there is some similarity between the two: the athletes need a strategy not just physical strength. It even looked like a brain game rather than sports. As we learn the rules for each game, we got to it. Knowing better, enjoying better.

I feel sorry I can’t deliver all of what I’ve seen and experienced that day, but I am confident you can enjoy the photos here whether you’re a player of the day or not.

바이크102에서는 지난 10월17-21일간 열린 아시아 사이클 선수권대회에 참관을 다녀왔습니다. 장소는 진천선수촌에 있는 벨로드롬에서 열렸습니다. 실내 트랙 경기장인데 한 바퀴가 250m로 짧아서 아주 박진감 넘치는 경기를 구경할 수 있었습니다. 다만 선수권대회라 그런지 일반인 관람객은 거의 없는 편이어서 아쉽긴 했으나, 경기 규칙을 하나씩 알면 알수록 재미있게 볼 수 있었습니다.

총 120바퀴를 돌면서 10바퀴마다 마지막 선수가 탈락하는 ‘제외 경기’, 특정 바퀴수마다 순위를 매기는 ‘포인트 경기’, 토너먼트 레이스인 ‘엘리트 경기’ 등의 경기로 다양한 재미를 즐길 수 있었습니다. 해당 경기의 성적으로 2020 도쿄 올림픽 출전권도 영향을 받는다고 하니, 좋은 성적을 낸 4일째는 관람객으로서도 기분 좋은 하루이기도 했습니다.

여기에 올리는 사진들은 경기를 구경하면서 틈틈이 찍은 것으로 일부 경기에 편중되어 있긴 합니다만, 경기에 출전한 선수들 및 관계자들, 그리고 일반대중을 위해서 흐름을 볼 수 있도록 시간 순서대로 올려놓습니다.
